Non-profit whistle-blowing outfit WikiLeaks today sent out a tweet with some pretty interesting information — at least to us in the cryptocurrency community.

“Did you know the majority of WikiLeaks public funding is #BitCoin and #LiteCoin?”, the tweet read, with a link to a donation page and to a bitcoin address overview on Blockchain.info.

That account reveals a bitcoin address that has received a total of about $3 million (3855 BTC), and a final balance of $8642 (11 BTC). The litecoin address has received nearly 509 LTC, which does not appear to have been spent.

The fact that donations are coming to WikiLeaks via bitcoin and litecoin shouldn’t come as a shock. Major financial institutions have distanced themselves from the organization due to the nature of their work. So it’s no surprise that the need for cryptocurrencies here is perfectly demonstrated.
