This story comes as a follow-up to a previous story regarding Overstock.com seeking to keep some of its bitcoin earnings.
Just moments later after making the above statement, Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne made note that in recent days, he’s personally acquired “several million” worth of bitcoin as an investment.
“Just to be clear, I personally have gone out in the last few days and bought several million dollars in bitcoin,” he said to others on the conference call.
The call quickly moved in another direction, so there was no talk as to how much Byrne put into the digital currency specifically, but one could say such a question would be improper, anyway.
Still, it’s interesting to see that Byrne has gone out of his way to pick up some bitcoin (surely putting his money where his mouth is), but it’s not surprising in the least. As mentioned in the article linked above, Byrne is very much an opponent to the idea government can create more money at the stroke of a pen. Patrick told me in an interview in late 2013 that he sees bitcoin as a viable alternative to traditional currency, given its limited quantity.
