Bulgaria-based BTC-e today announced the indefinite halting of both deposits and withdrawals of the Russian ruble via the QIWI system and other methods.
The news comes following an uncertain climate in Russia with regard to cryptocurrencies, in which it has previously been said that the use of bitcoin may violate some laws. Other unconfirmed reports circulating suggest the country has banned the digital currency entirely.
Meanwhile, it doesn’t seem as if other currencies are affected.
A Reddit.com user going by the name of “the_cliffhanger” provided an English human translation of BTC-e’s statement:
Dear BTC-E users!
Due to the decisions made in relation to crypto currencies in Russia, QIWI deposits and withdrawals, as well as deposits and withdrawals through other payment systems, are halted indefinitely.
All financial obligations will be fulfilled using other options without imposing additional fees. We recommend using OKPAY to withdraw USD or EUR, withdrawal fee through OKPAY is now 0%.
We apologize for the inconveniences.
It’s unclear just where this goes from here, but it should be noted that the QIWI method was one of the last remaining for Russian users.
