Representative Jared Polis of Colorado is known to be a friend to the bitcoin community. When Senator Joe Manchin wrote an angry letter trying to get bitcoin banned, Polis fired back with impressive timing asking for a ban of the U.S. Dollar while they were at it.
At an event on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Nevada-based Robocoin demonstrated their bitcoin ATM. The purpose? To help educate members of congress on the bitcoin technology.
As for Congressman Polis: he’s the proud owner of a small amount of bitcoin.
Polis is reported to have exchanged $10 for .02 BTC, showing his colleagues how simple it can be to use bitcoin.
“When people don’t understand something there’s a natural tendency to fear it to try to preserve the status quo, and I expect those forces to continue to rear those heads, particularly with inevitable consumer loss and criminal activities that occur with any currency,” he said.
Will he be tucking it away in hopes it will be worth much more in the future? Doesn’t look like it. The Congressman will reportedly be purchasing a pair of alpaca socks (one of the first few products available for purchase with bitcoin).
Congratulations, Mr. Congressman, and welcome to the club. [source: CoinReport.net]
