The Bitcoin Foundation has announced that they have retained Monica Monaco, the founder and managing director of TRUST EU Affairs, in order to assist the Foundation with outreach to both politicians and policymakers in the European Union.
Ms. Monaco is based in Brussels, Belgium, and is said to have extensive experience in European affairs with relation to payment systems, consumer credit, e-commerce, and financial education.
The idea is to help the Bitcoin Foundation both protect and promote — you guessed it — bitcoin (which of course are the key goals of the Foundation).
“With the new European Parliament and Commission being formed up, now is the right time to engage with Brussels,” remarked Jim Harper, Global Policy Counsel for the Bitcoin Foundation. “As we’ve been doing in the United States, we’ll be introducing the foundation, educating policymakers about Bitcoin, and sharing Bitcoin’s achievements and potential in terms of financial inclusion with leading policymakers and public officials.”
Monica Monaco previously worked for VISA Europe in the legal department as Senior Manager for EU Relations and Regulatory Affairs. There, Ms. Monaco was responsible for relations with the European Commission, European Parliament, and the European Council Working Group on Financial Services. She was also responsible for relations with other national regulators.
“Through the collaboration with TRUST EU Affairs, the Bitcoin Foundation will continue to expand awareness and recognition of the Bitcoin community, the Bitcoin protocol, and its benefits. This action aims at discouraging uninformed negative treatment of Bitcoin and at laying the groundwork for law and policy changes that both maintain Bitcoin’s independence and permit Bitcoin’s fuller integration into mainstream financial services systems,” Friday’s press announcement read.
