On Tuesday, a mysterious post turned up on Google Plus from an account titled “BitPay” (see that post here) noting that the Seattle Seahawks would be accepting bitcoin.
“We are excited to see out newest merchant, +Seattle Seahawks, accepting bitcoin and going to the Super Bowl!”, the post read, to the excitement of fans and bitcoin enthusiasts alike.
Almost immediately, the post was discussed on the web, particularly on the Reddit.com bitcoin subreddit, where as of this writing, a discussion thread on the rumor still exists.
As we imagined the case would be, the news is just not true.
“I checked and this is not true,” said a BitPay spokesperson to newsBTC this morning. “The team is working to have that post removed.”
Rumors of this nature are unfortunately common in the world of bitcoin. Some are done for the sake of ‘fun’, others with more, shall we say, lucrative intentions — designed to bring up the price of bitcoin. What ever the motive is here, the rumor can now be considered debunked.
