One of the last places you’d expect Atlanta, Georgia-based BitPay to get involved with is probably sports.
The bitcoin payment processor recently announced that they have signed on to sponsor the St. Petersburg Bowl Game that takes place annually, calling it the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl.
Now, they’ve added to their sponsorship list.
The company announced on Monday that they have now partnered up with the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Athletic Association in a deal brokered by IMG College (the multimedia rights partner for the university).
The partnership will sponsor Georgia Tech’s football and basketball programs, allowing BitPay to display their logo in addition to the bitcoin symbol in the Bobby Dodd Stadium (capacity: 55,000) and the McCamish Pavilion (capacity: 8,600) in throughout the 2014-2015 school year (compared to the three-year deal done with the St. Petersburg Bowl).
“Through our partnership with IMG College, BitPay was able to sponsor Georgia Tech Athletics with bitcoin,” said BitPay CEO Stephen Pair. “This sponsorship also allows BitPay to increase awareness of bitcoin and support our alma mater at the same time.”
The sponsorship hits close to home. Both Pair and BitPay Executive Chairman Tony Gallippi are both graduates of Georgia Tech.
“Pairing an innovative technology company pioneering a new digital currency with Georgia Tech is a great match,” says Kristen Rose, who heads Georgia Tech IMG Spots Marketing. “The use of bitcoin in the sports world is brand new, and we’re proud Georgia Tech is leading the trend through this partnership.”
