Chicago Sun-Times Planning New Crypto-Related Endeavors

The Chicago Sun-Times certainly seems to be on a roll when it comes to their bitcoin adoption techniques. The paper became the first major news publication to allow subscribers to pay with bitcoin back in April, following a brief paywall test in early February.

In a Wall Street Journal | BitBeat piece from last week, some interesting information came out with regard to some in-the-works plans the Sun-Times has when it comes to advertising and business expansion.

The word is that the paper is planning to run advertisements with QR codes, which will allow readers to pay for the advertised products with bitcoin directly.

They are seemingly going big for the first test. WSJ says that the first things to be sold will be tickets (in partnership with a local ticket exchange) for a Jay-Z/Beyonce concert taking place in Soldier Field during the summer.

“The implications of this are pretty massive we feel,” says Josh Metnick, CTO at Wrapports, parent company of the Sun-Times. “It will allow newspapers or any printed media, for the first time we are aware of, the ability to transact directly with customers, to allow newspaper advertisers the ability to sell directly to consumers reading the paper.”

With regard to subscriptions, it’s being reported that the Sun-Times will be allowing customers to pay in addition digital currencies, the likes of which inlcude litecoin, peercoin, and yes, dogecoin.

And speaking of dogecoin, that leads us to the next Sun-Times experiment.

The paper is planning to conduct an experiment that will allow readers to tip journalists at the paper dogecoin. Referring to dogecoin tipping as “the new like,” the experiment could start with having the tips go to the journalist’s favorite charity and working from there.

Certainly, some very exciting things ahead from crypto-enthusiasts.
