Coinbase announced its acquisition of the Kippt team today. Kippt is a startup that focuses on “finding, reading, storing, searching and sharing information on the web.”
Coinbase said in their statement that Kippt’s, Jori Lallo and Karri Saarinen, whom have experience in development and design, “will be joining our product team to help us continue to make Bitcoin easy to use for the everyday consumer, merchant, and developer.” Jori’s work can already be seen in Coinbase’s app gallery and Karri’s work for Coinbase goes as far back as July when they released their new design.
The move seems to signify an effort to bring cleaner, easy-to-use user interfaces for Bitcoin applications. This is something the community has been wanting and is necessary for consumers and merchants who aren’t as tech savvy as early adopters to use, store, buy and sell Bitcoin.
Kippt which was unable to scale and reach a sustainable user base will continue running Kippt and Inc (the business version of Kippt) but will discontinue its’ paid Kippt Pro program.
This is probably beginning of many merger and acquisition deals to come as companies join forces to gain market share and differentiate themselves, which should benefit the community in more ways than one.
