Just announced this morning by the Bitcoin Foundation is news that Overstock.com CEO and Chairman Patrick Byrne will be the keynote speaker for the Bitcoin 2014 Conference taking place between May 15th-17th in Amsterdam.
Byrne made news in late 2013 when he announced first to newsBTC that his company would be accepting bitcoin in 2014. At the time of my interview with Byrne, he projected that bitcoin payments would begin some time in the second half of this year.
Due to overwhelming press attention, however, the company worked tirelessly to enable bitcoin payments sooner. By early January, the company flipped the switch and began accepting bitcoin payments.
Since then, the company has managed to reel in over $1 million worth of the digital currency, as announced recently.
Given this, Byrne and his company have become rather popular in the bitcoinosphere.
“We are delighted to have one of Bitcoin’s most prominent and prescient champions at our conference. Patrick’s decision to accept Bitcoin has introduced it to mainstream society and increased understanding among consumers. It’s going to be a great event; this conference is where visionary technology and mainstream commerce intersects,” said Jon Matonis, Executive Director at the Bitcoin Foundation.
Certainly, we can probably expect no shortage of interesting things to happen at the conference.
