Small Group Claims Responsibility for Mysterious Los Angeles Bitcoin Billboards

If you live in the Los Angeles area, you may have noticed a few billboard advertisements with a bitcoin symbol, QR code, and statement that reads “Let’s make this an international news story” and “Help make the bitcoin grow.”

There were a few theories as to why they were put, and who put them up, but it looks like now we’re getting some more details.

A small group has taken responsibility for the advertisements, going so far as to post scans of agreements with CBS outdoor on www.bitcoinbillboards.org.

The group (comprised of middle-class individuals who wish to remain anonymous) says their inspiration for posting the billboards came from seeing a college kid on ESPN holding a bitcoin poster.

The mission?

To create buzz on the Bitcoin, to raise awareness to the general population that the Bitcoin even exists, to grow the use of it and to bring together the Bitcoin community to show how strong we can be. We want to ensure that legitimate Bitcoin enthusiasts do not misunderstand our message. We are not begging for Bitcoins. We see plenty of that with posts and articles where people ask for personal donations, claiming or promising that they will then use that money to do something. We didn’t do it in that order. We launched the campaign first without asking anyone for anything. We put everything we could into this and just did it, whether any Bitcoins were sent back to us or not. Anything sent to us is taxable income and the taxable amount will be paid to the IRS, even if we are at a loss from the expense of the billboards.

Our favorite part? They call it “the” bitcoin. (via BitcoinBillboards)
