The small town of Darrington, Washington was recently hit by a landslide (last week). A devastating event in itself, but even more so with the news that 18 individuals have died and another 30 are missing as of Sunday, according to CBS.
The town is now looking for donations to help the victims of the mudslide, and has turned to bitcoin as one of the options. Funds donated are to be used for transport, housing, and medical expenses.
You can see the “Donate Bitcoins” button on the Town of Darrington’s website.
“I was born and raised near the slide. I knew many of the victims and I was left with a horrible feeling of helplessness not being there when it happened. Setting up bitcoin donations is my way to help the community of Darrington,” said Paden Newberry of Bellingham, Washingon (but grew up in Darrington) to Bitcoin Magazine.
Not surprisingly, the town plans to convert received bitcoins into U.S. Dollars, and a post on Reddit.com indicates that over 0.5 BTC has been donated thus far.
