The 1911 United Political Action Committee (better known as a super PAC) is calling for support of what they’re aptly naming “bitcoin candidates”. The call for action, posted on the super PAC’s website says that they “want to offer everyday people the opportunity to unite and influence the political landscape in a way that allows Bitcoin to be seen for what it is – currency freedom.”
“Bitcoin provides a unique opportunity for everyday people to participate in a movement that could change the world,” they say. “The virtual currency is not just a new way to send and receive money – it is a form of financial expression that tears down barriers and bridges people together.”
Aside from endorsing bitcoin candidates, the PAC is also working with Coinfunder to help elect the first bitcoin candidate, allowing voters to submit donations in the digital currency (which in turn serves as a vote for a particular candidate). Those who do not wish to participate may donate bitcoin via the PAC’s connection with CoinBase.
The 1911 United Political Action Committee was the first African-American PAC to support Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012, but are not the sole supporters of bitcoin in the political world in the United States. Former U.S. Congressman Ron Paul has been an open proponent of the digital currency.
