Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has reportedly spoken his mind on the topic of bitcoin via WeChat Livestream at the Net Prophet technology conference that takes place annually.
“Bitcoin is the most intellectually interesting development in the last two years,” he said.
According to Assange, the technology behind the bitcoin protocol is creating new global consensus by using cryptography to enforce agreements as opposed to having laws on a book.
These enforced agreements keep everyone using the bitcoin network on the same page, so to speak. Assange adds that the lack of regulation in the space is a contributing factor to the flourishing of innovation that is bringing about exciting new start-ups.
Under traditional financial systems, Assange suggests, those in control can often be pushed around by the state. Therefore, he considers bitcoin to be important as it brings a level of diversity into the equation.
Speaking of diversity, Assange suggests it’s the very reason some bank account holders (particularly in the United States) have either had bitcoin-related transactions to/from their accounts blocks or have had their accounts closed entirely.
Assange agrees that it’s important for centralized organizations — particularly those in the financial sector — become decentralized.
Bitcoin, of course, is a good first step in that direction.
Mr. Assange is currently under asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
