It’s no surprise that the Bitcoin community, with its constant stream of innovations and ideas, is filled with creative people. Lately, it seems that more & more artists are being drawn towards cryptocurrency – accepting Bitcoin as a payment method for their artwork, painting representations of the abstract ideas behind cryptocurrency, developing uses of blockchain technology to benefit the overall art world. Bitcoin and art are undoubtedly connected, and the exploration of this relationship is certainly a hot topic. And in early January, that intersection will be on display for all to see at a gallery opening in New York City.
Partial Mystery, a Brooklyn-based event series run by Creative Girls of NYC, is bringing their latest installment to RABBITHOLESTUDIO in DUMBO. The gallery show runs for one night only, on January 7. “Partial Mystery is half art show, half social event,” their Facebook page reads. “We rent out a gallery, fill it with our artwork, and hold a party.” Each event is centered around a single theme, and all of the artwork must relate in some way; past themes have ranged from sharks to the Internet.
This time, the theme is MONEY.
In the midst of the broader theme, the event is taking a closer look at cryptocurrency and its potential for disruption in today’s changing world. The event organizers are striving to invite an open dialogue about the problems with the current financial system, as well as possible solutions, with pieces ranging from a parasitic representation of Wall Street by Brooke McGowen to a poster advocating the benefits of Bitcoin by Maurice Doherty. The pop-up event is meant to bring deep conversations and the consideration of artwork into a more lighthearted environment than usual – in this case, a party in a Brooklyn gallery.
The event is sponsored by Gocheto Financials, a Bitcoin accounting and advisory firm who hopes to advance the promotion of Bitcoin. Hayel Abbassi, co-founder of Gocheto, spoke to the importance of integrating cryptocurrency and artistic visions:
“Art and Bitcoin both allow for a huge amount of creativity and innovation. Through our collaboration with Partial Mystery, we want to inspire new conversations and drive Bitcoin adoption.“
Many of the pieces will be available for purchase with Bitcoin, in accordance with the theme. While several of the participating artists already had some level of familiarity with accepting Bitcoin, others are learning about the process solely for the sake of the event. By exposing more of the art world to the ease of Bitcoin payments, Partial Mystery will attempt to challenge the Observer article posted earlier this year, Nobody Buys Art with Bitcoin. Some people do buy art with Bitcoin, and there’s a good chance of it happening this January.
All visitors to the gallery are invited to stay for the entire night, from 7PM until midnight. Submissions for the show will remain open until January 6 and may be submitted to creativegirlsofnyc@gmail.com. Any additional questions may be directed to the Facebook event page or to creativegirlsofnyc@gmail.com.
