This Monday, the Taiwanese Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) declared Bitcoin an illegal asset.

Last year the Taiwanese central bank issued a warning stating that bitcoin was a highly speculative virtual asset and lacked a mechanism to protect its transactions. Now, claims of illegal activities being conducted with aid of the virtual currency were taken to court by the Taiwanese Financial Supervisory Commission.

It all began when a Hong Kong tycoon was kidnapped and held hostage for more than a month by a gang in Taiwan. The gang was demanding a ransom to be paid in bitcoin.

Today, the Chairman Tseng Ming-chung, a representative of the Financial Supervisory Commission was questioned at the legislative hearing; whether or not the virtual currency could be used in Taiwan. He immediately stated that this new digital currency posed big threats on the island’s financial economy and declared the use of bitcoin an illegal act in Taiwan. He stated that Bitcoin was illegal and pledged that the Financial Supervisory Commission was already working with the country’s police and central bank to crack down any illegal activity.

Until now, there was no legal claim against the digital currency, but Tseng said that the Financial Supervisory Commission was working on a regulatory bill and would be publishing a statement jointly with the central bank to inform other countries of such regulations as well. The FSC is said to be releasing this new regulatory bill in the near future.

Bitcoin appeared in late 2009 as a new way of electronically sending money without the need of third parties getting involved. It’s a decentralized currency and it is not controlled by any banking authority or country. Bitcoin has been gaining momentum in many countries, but some are unfriendly towards the virtual currency. After, Iceland, Ecuador and Costa Rica, Taiwan becomes the 4th country to officially declare to be hostile against bitcoin.

Probably a ‘banker’ controlled gang, this just seems way to fishy – needed an excuse to make it illegal. Bet they start ‘seizing’ bitcoin and selling them….

If they make Bitcoin illegal, presumably it will somehow stop kidnappers from using it to extort ransoms?

Well you can’t blame BTC for this, only because kidnappers claim BTC ransoms.

Bitcoin is going to be illegal the same way it’s illegal to run red lights here. Everyone that visited Taiwan knows exactly what I’m talking about 🙂

If the kidnappers would have demanded dollars or precious metals then should these payment methods also be made illegal? Also, if Bitcoin is to be illegal in Taiwan then how will they ever manage to transact business in the future when Bitcoin or some other cryptocurrency is used widely across the globe? It sounds like a handful of Taiwan officials will be ‘boxing in’ the whole country and closing it’s doors to trading opportunities.

I’ve just checked your profile. As of 4th of November 2015 you have made 1256 comments on various posts.

After reading a few of your comments, it soon becomes apparent that you are some kind troll with nothing better to do with your life other than to be a public nuisance.

If you are so smart or have something intelligent or valuable to add to discussions, why don’t you reveal your true identity?

Just about all of your comments can be interpreted as a cry for help. I’d suggest making an appointment with a Doctor and present your comments as a list of possible symptoms.

I sincerely hope that you seek some help and maybe one day you will become a happier person. You could then be doing something worthwhile with your life.

They actually sell Bitcoin EVERYWHERE here in Taiwan as every other convenience store has terminals that sells it. The bill hasn’t been formulated and must pass elected government officials even when it is. It will take many months of dealing for this to happen. As nothing has happened, the title is pure clickbait.
